How to get better at pickleball, even if you’re not on court
Reflection is great, self analysis is great and certainly beneficial to your game. The question is: When do you analyze your game?
If it’s on the way home after playing in a tournament that’s a starting point, but it won’t help you once your tournament is over! It may help you in your next match but there’s a better way!
I believe that self analysis, adjustment and resetting on court is key to improving your game. (As well as recognising your opponents strengths and weaknesses. But that’s another subject)
What does this mean? I’m glad you asked!!
The mistakes beginners & intermediate players make is OVERCOMPENSATION, when losing a game, trying harder, trying to hit better or going for perfect shots.
SMALL CHANGES - MAKE BIG DIFFERENCES
Small correct adjustments to your game works, slight changes can completely change the outcome of a game or match. Reducing unforced errors, giving yourself some margin over the net, watching the ball before it crosses the net all have a positive impact.
A ‘time out’ is a great example of a small change making a big difference. We have all observed a well called ‘timeout’ from a losing team. This disruption of play is only 60 seconds but can stop momentum and halt a team in their winning streak.
A small Adjustment in your own game could be instead of getting upset about hitting the tape on a third shot, encourage yourself to aim a little higher, or take the ball in front. Remind yourself on court of the coaching tips you have heard on shot technique.
SELF TALK
Next time you’re on court and you miss a point, or make a mistake instead of scolding yourself, calling yourself names try a different approach! Encourage yourself with positive words and self coaching such as:
“You’ve got this, take your time, keep your paddle up..watch the ball, don’t rush the winning shots or I’ll get the next one”
